Local Rides Recommended local mountain bike rides: Deep Creek Trail:
Fast, smooth, high alpine singletrack, 9 miles one way, or 18 miles out and back. You can shuttle this trail if you want all downhill, or if you want to ride up, the climb is pretty mellow until the last 3 miles when you may be pushing a few times. To get to the lower trailhead from South Fork travel 18 miles north on HWY 149 to Deep Creek Rd. Turn left, travel approx 2 miles to the well marked trailhead on the left. Difficulty rating: 4* Video Pallisade/Alder Bench Trail: All singletrack, 7 miles one way, 14 miles out and back. You can shuttle this trail for a downhillers dream, or climb it if you like a challenge. Lots of switchbacks and elevation gain, as well as some technical rock areas. Lower trailhead located just behind the Rio Grande Club property at the Alder Guard station (2 miles up the Alder Creek forest road which is located right next to the golf course). Upper trailhead located on Forest Road 610 accessible from Pool Table Road. Difficulty rating: 8* Video ![]() Trout Creek Trail: ATV trail that is also great for mountain biking. Not your typical ATV trail that is rutted, rocky, and torn up, this trail is well built and maintained. 4 miles back to the creek, or you can push on further but might face a lot of deadfall a ways after the creek. Lots of switchbacks and elevation change. To get to the trailhead from South Fork travel West on HWY 160 for approx 3 miles. The trailhead is on the right side of the highway in an open meadow with a livestock loading chute in the middle of it. Difficulty rating: 6* Penitente Canyon: The canyon offers a total change of scenery from typical South Fork trails. Desert, boulders, and slickrock make for some amazing mountain biking, as well as rock climbing. The A-Loop offers great technical riding with some slickrock, and some more challenging "rock options" if you want to test your balance and skill. The B-Loop offers a mellow combination of desert singletrack and jeep roads that winds its way around washes and canyons. The Forest Service is currently adding some new trails for even more riding possibilities. To get to Penitente Canyon from South Fork travel 14 miles east to Del Norte, at the stoplight turn north on HWY 112, travel approx 3 miles to the sign for Penitente Canyon. Take a left, and travel several miles on the dirt road, looking for the next sign indicating a left turn to Penitente. The parking area is about a mile up this road, and the A loop starts just before the parking area on the road you came in on. The B loop starts above the parking area about 1/2 mile if you take the singletrack from the far end of the parking lot and go left. Difficulty rating: A-Loop 6*, B-Loop 3*. Video Middle Frisco Trail: A beautiful single track that climbs deep into the high alpine terrain of Colorado. 7 miles one way, 14 miles out and back. This ride begins at the confluence of west and middle Frisco Creek. From here the single track parallels Middle Frisco Creek all the way up to Frisco Lake. Or you can take the West Frisco ATV trail up (a slightly easier climb), and the singletrack Middle Frisco trail back down. The trail begins at 9,500 ft and climbs up to 12,000 ft at the lake. The first half of the trail has a smooth flow though the aspens and pines as it meanders up, down and around while maintaining an overall steady climb. Riders can expect to negotiate a few stationary rocks and tree roots. As Frisco Creek valley gets steeper, the trail has a series of switch backs that are a little loose and rocky but all rideable. The trail here is more technical because it is looser, rockier and more exposed than the lower part. As you near the lake, you will emerge above the tree line and behold some amazing Colorado views. Once reaching the lake, you are ready to reverse your tracks and begin 2,500 vertical feet of pure downhill fun! To get to Middle Frisco Trail from South Fork, take highway 160 east approx 14 miles to Del Norte. Drive through town until you see the car wash on the right or South side of the road. Just after the car wash take a right on French Street or County Road 13. This road starts out paved and turns into a well maintained dirt road accessible by a low clearance 2WD vehicle. Continue on this road for about 9 miles where you will come across the signed trail head. Difficulty rating: 5*, or just ride the lower part for a difficulty rating of 3*. Video Recommended local road rides: Wolf Creek Pass HWY 160: Wolf Creek Pass is a great way to challenge yourself if you are looking for a scenic road ride in South Fork. 19 miles from town to the top, with about 2,600 ft. elevation gain. Most of the route to the top of Wolf Creek has a great 4 ft. shoulder, but there is one 4 mile stretch where the shoulder is virtually non-existent. Thankfully on this stretch the speed limit is only 50, so its generally not a problem. The steepest part of the road on the east side of Wolf Creek is about a 6% grade. To get to this ride, simply head west on HWY 160 from South Fork, and immediately realize you are climbing! Difficulty rating: 7* Video ![]() HWY 160 South Fork to Monte Vista: HWY 160 from South Fork to Monte Vista is smooth, fast, and relatively easy with a shoulder wide enough to ride 4 bikes wide most of the way! Mostly flat with a few rollers, brand new pavement. Great mountain views the whole way as you ride through farm and ranch country. Approx 30 miles one way to Monte vista, or 60 miles round trip. If you ride back to South Fork, be prepared for a headwind typically blowing through the San Luis Valley which can range from a gentle breeze to a stiff wind, especially in the Spring and early Summer. To get to this ride, simply head east on HWY 160 from anywhere in South Fork. Difficutly rating: 1* Pinos Creek Road: From South Fork you can drive, or ride your bike 14 miles east to Del Norte. Just before you enter town turn right (south) on Pinos Creek Road. You can park at the intersection of Pinos Creek Road and HWY 160 if you drove your car. The road has a steady but mostly gentle incline as it winds it way up a valley through farm and ranch country. No real shoulder on this road, but hardly any traffic. The road is paved for approx. 12 miles for a great out and back. Difficulty rating: 3* * Difficulty ratings based on a scale of 1-10. Difficulty ratings not guaranteed by Alpine Bike and Ski. |
